University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine
Welcome
Our research broadly applies bioengineering principles to better understand human neuroscience relevant to anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. The unifying theme is acquisition of systems-level neural data to understand cognitive processes that characterize consciousness, with a focus on memory formation and pain perception and their inhibition: amnesia and analgesia. In addition to the high relevance to the clinical practice of anesthesiology and pain medicine, important questions fundamental to neuroscience are being addressed as well. We support and actively engage in team science and are excited to collaborate with other researchers and engage with trainees working at the interface of engineering, neuroscience, and medicine. We welcome potential collaborators, trainees, volunteer subjects, patients, and the public to explore this site that highlights our current work.

Current Research
Our research has broad themes including an arm exploring the intersection of cognitive neuroscience and anesthetic pharmacology. We are concomitantly committed to better understanding and improving patient well-being, with focus on the relief of pain and the improvement of mood and neurocognitive function, particularly after surgery.
